Where Church, Evangelism, and Mass Murder Intersect
Mass murders are preventable tragedies. These are evil acts committed by evil people, whether they take twenty-two lives, ten lives, or fifty-three lives.
Secular Experts ask again and again, Why does this keep happening? Many suggest we have an unprecedented mental health crisis that psychologists and mental health experts can fix or at least help alleviate. Others say we need to make “soft targets” like Walmart, Target, concerts or religious centers safer by adding more armed guards and taking other security steps to make them “hard targets.”
The secular experts can’t explain or prevent the growing horror of mass murder we see unfolding on America’s news channels. We are reaping what we have sown as a nation. You can only teach a nation’s children there's no God, no Law, no Judge, and no Hell for so long before they begin to act out the lessons they have been taught. You can only teach children they’re evolved apes for so long before they begin to act like them. This is what we see in America today.
America doesn't need more psychologists. Psychology is a large part of how we got here. Psychology feeds the sin nature of man, perpetually teaching us to be lovers of self and blamers of others, ever in pursuit of a more “positive” self-image despite the innate sinfulness of self. Psychology feeds the self-centered, narcissistic heart of man that beats in the chest of all of these mass murderers and all unregenerate men.
America doesn’t need more armed guards. Short of unleashing the U.S. Military and making our nation a police state, we can’t possibly have enough armed guards in every store, school, park, and random place people gather to stop these vicious attacks. Nor could such an effort be practically or financially sustained. Those who desire to carry out such evil attacks against human beings would simply find an alternative way to do so.
What America needs is the Word of God, which is God’s revelation to human beings about himself, about us, and about what we must do to be reconciled to Him.
“Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law.” -Proverbs 29:18
America needs a revival of the fear of God. America needs God's Law and Gospel preached everywhere: pulpits, streets, city centers, parks, river fronts, schools, colleges, sporting events, doorsteps, checkout stands, dinner tables, living rooms—everywhere! The proclamation of God’s Word holds sin and sinners in check. In a culture saturated by God’s Word, evil becomes restrained. That’s what America needs.
The Purpose of All Things
Christ Jesus did not chiefly come into the world to make Walmart, movie theaters, or concerts a safer place, nor did He primarily come to instill morality into our communities as a whole. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” 1 Timothy 1:15. Even though the public proclamation and triumph of Holy Scripture holds sin and sinners in check, the greater glory, the greater grace, the foremost mission of Christ, and the main purpose for preaching the Word of God to every sinner, everywhere, is that it saves sinners.
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17
“The Holy Scriptures . . . are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 3:15
Christ Jesus, fully and eternally God the Son, created the cosmos, our planet, our solar system, mankind, trees, and everything else that exists so that He, our Creator, could come into His creation through the womb of the virgin Mary, live a perfect sinless life, lay down His life willingly, and suffer the full wrath of God in the cross that our sins deserve. He died upon a wooden cross and was resurrected on the third day, conquering sin and death on behalf of all those who will repent and confess Him as Lord. This is why the universe was created. This is why humans are here. This is why space, time, matter, butterflies, grass, and everything else was spoken into the existence. This is the foremost reason why we preach the Word of God from the rooftops, to all men everywhere!
“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” -Romans 10:14-15
"Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops . . . Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” -Matthew 10:27-33
Sin is ravaging our land. Sinners are going to Hell. What should we do about it? What should every local church, pastor, and Christian do about it? What did Jesus Christ command us to do about it?
“That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations.” Luke 24:47
